How To Reduce Cholesterol Levels

A lot of people believe that Cholesterol is caused by eating only excess Fats. Not true ! Alcohol, smoking, excess carbs/proteins/fats , sedentary lifestyle, messed up sleep cycle – all these are factors which lead to high cholesterol.

Alcohol – Alcohol has sugar and it messes with the level of insulin in the body. You can replace your Beer or Vodka with red wine which is full of antioxidants. Port wine is a nice option once in a while although I think it tastes like cough syrup, yuck !

Sugar – I repeat Sugar is an evil and none of us need it. Sugar is not only what you put in your tea or coffee. All junk food is Sugar. Rather, I should say – anything which is man made is Sugar.

Snacks – Make snacking a habit. This will help you to control hunger pangs. Nuts and seeds are healthy snacks. Seeds are rich source of fibre which reduces absorption of cholesterol.

Cooking Oil – If you are suffering from high cholesterol, you need to avoid saturated fat like ghee, butter, margarine. Although, I argue every time that Ghee is healthy but my suggestion would be to avoid if you are trying to reduce cholesterol. Use oils like olive oil, rice bran oil, almond oil which are rich in MUFA. MUFA lowers bad cholesterol and increases good cholesterol

Non Veg – If you are a non veggie, avoid eating red meat. Chicken and fish are a  better choice.

Dairy – Avoid full fat dairy products. Have home made paneer rather than sourcing paneer and cheese from outside. Consume skimmed milk and not full fat milk.

Low GI and negative calorie food – Adopt these , read about them here and here.

Smoking – Lungs are meant to inhale oxygen and NOT smoke. Please get rid of this habit.

Sedentary Lifestyle – Increase your activity level. Sitting on your ass all the time does no good !

Water – Make water your best friend ! This won’t help lowering the cholestrol directly but water helps to flush toxins from the body. 8 glasses of water is not the ideal intake but minimum intake required.

1 out of 3 is suffering from High Cholesterol today; it has become a lifestyle disease. Healthy Lifestyle is the only solution to cure high bad cholesterol.
