Symptoms of Fever

A low grade fever occurs when a person’s body temperature reaches 100–102°F (37.8 to 39°C). A high grade fever occurs when a person’s body temperature exceeds 104°F (40°C).

It is recommended to take a tepid bath instead of cold bath as it helps soothe tired muscles.

Dress lightly:

People tend to wear a few layers of clothes during fever and add more if they start feeling cold, that must be avoided.

Children with fever also need plenty of fluids. Some appealing alternatives include, warm chicken broth, flavored jello and diluted fruit juice

Resting:

Children after taking OTC medication may feel more energetic and playful. However, parents or caregivers should ensure proper rest until the fever has passed.

Taking warm baths:

If children are not ready to take a bath, it is recommended to place a warm washcloth instead of rubbing alcohol on the child’s forehead to help soothe the fever.

Taking OTC medications:

Although, there is no need of medicines, yet it can be taken to feel more comfortable. People may consult a doctor to advise appropriate doses.

When to see a doctor

People or children with very high fever including the following symptoms must consult a doctor:

  • stiffness or pain in the neck

  • sensitivity to light

  • rash

  • dehydration

  • seizure

Parents should seek medical treatment for a child who:

  • is under 3 months old and has a fever of 100.4°F or higher

  • is 3–6 months old and has a temperature of 102.2°F or higher

  • has a fever that has lasted for more than 5 days

  • has other signs such as a rash

  • has symptoms of dehydration, such as sunken eyes, lack of tears when crying

  • is not eating and seems generally unwell

Although, there is no requirement of medications, but if there is a very high fever. Always check appropriate treatments and dosages with a doctor or pharmacist before administering them to a child or infant.
