Fibromyalgia is a long-term, chronic, painful condition. It can cause pain in muscles and bones, areas of tenderness, sleep and cognitive disturbances. It is also known as “Region of Pain“. There are some areas of tenderness also known as “Trigger Points”. If the pain is in 4 out of 5 regions then there is surely a need for checkup.

Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a disorder of caused due to abnormality in the way pain signals are processed in the central nervous system. The symptoms of Fibromyalgia are;

  • fatigue
  • trouble in sleeping
  • sleeping for long periods of time without feeling rested
  • headaches
  • depression
  • anxiety
  • trouble in focusing or paying attention 
  • pain or a dull ache in the lower belly 
  • dryness of eyes

Fibromyalgia Trigger Points

Common trigger points of Fibromyalgia includes the:

  • Tops of the shoulders
  • Upper chest
  • Hips
  • Knees
  • Outer elbows

If you have had pain in 4 out of the 5 upper mentioned areas of pain, you can be diagnosed Fibromyalgia. 

Fibromyalgia pain

Pain is the basic of all fibromyalgia symptoms. The pain can range from mild ache to an intense and almost unbearable discomfort. You might find your body overreacting to things that shouldn’t normally be painful.

Chest pain

When fibromyalgia pain is in your chest, it can feel frighteningly similar to the pain of a heart attack. Fibromyalgia chest pain may feel like sharp, stabbing burning sensation.

Back pain

Your back is one of the most common places to feel pain. Stretching and strengthening exercises can help provide support to the muscles and other soft tissues of your back.

Leg pain

Leg pain can feel similar to the soreness of a pulled muscle or the stiffness of arthritis. It can be deep, burning and throbbing pain.

Causes of Fibromyalgia

There can be multiple causes of Fibromyalgia.

  • Infection

Past illnesses like flu, pneumonia, GI infections could trigger fibromyalgia or make its symptoms worse. 

  • Genes

Fibromyalgia often runs in the family. If you have a family member with this condition, you are at a higher risk for developing it.

  • Stress

It happens to be a serious cause of fibromyalgia and trauma or stress can leave long-lasting effects on body.

Fibromyalgia Risk Factors

Gender: Most fibromyalgia cases are commonly diagnosed in women, although the reason for this gender disparity is not clear.

Age: Fibromyalgia is mostly diagnosed in middle age. The risk increases as one gets older. 

Family history: If you have close family members with fibromyalgia, you may be at greater risk for developing it.

Disease: Although fibromyalgia is not a form of arthritis, having lupus or Rheumatoid Arthritis may increase the risk of also having fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia treatment

Presently, there is no treatment for fibromyalgia. Its treatment focuses on reducing symptoms.

  • Medications can relieve pain and help sleep better.
  • Exercise and stress-reduction techniques can help feel better, both mentally and physically.
  • It is good to seek support and guidance.
  • Medications includes pain reliever, Antidepressants, Antiseizure drugs.
  • Natural remedies like physical therapy, acupuncture, 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP), meditation, yoga can help.
  • Dietary strategies like eating more fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy products and lean protein can be of help.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Eat more plant based meals than meat.
  • Reduce the amount of sugar intake.
  • Try to maintain a healthy weight.

Fibromyalgia cannot be considered an autoimmune disorder because it doesn’t cause inflammation. There  is no evidence indicating fibromyalgia causing damage to bodily tissues. So next time whenever you feel some unexplained discomfort or pain, think about Fibromyalgia.
